Using non-toxic materials, work with master printer Catherine Kernan to explore the spontaneous and painterly qualities of monotype and monoprint. Brush, roll, wipe and layer a variety of surfaces to produce surprising and unpredictable colors and textures. Learn methods of registration, overprinting, viscosity rolls and resists, transfers, ghost images, collographs, chine colle and color separation. Learn to think in color and how to exploit the unique luminosity of waterbased inks and paints.

We will focus on the newly developed Akua-Kolor waterbased monotype and intaglio inks as well as fume-free waterbased pencils, crayons and paints.

This is an opportunity for each student to pursue in depth a project or projects not limited to one printmaking medium. Artists who have some experience in painting and/or printmaking are welcome, as are novices. Emphasis in the workshop will be on identifying and enhancing the synergy between each participant's own way of making art and the processes of printmaking.

Catherine Kernan has been an exhibiting artist-printmaker for nearly 25 years. She has been an art instructor for just as long, having held many faculty positions at colleges, art institutes and museums. She has taught numerous workshops throughout the eastern U.S., as well as other regions and countries. She has received many fellowships and grants including the Visual Artist Grant from the Somerville Arts Council, Artist in Residence Grant from the Winchester Foundation for Educational Excellence, and the Artist's Resource Trust Fund of the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation Grant.

This workshop will offer an opportunity to build on the topics of the previous week. All levels are welcome.

Are you fascinated with the spontaneity and surprises of monotype and monoprint? Are you inspired by brushing, rolling, wiping, color mixing and layering? Do the generative possibilities of printmaking appeal to you? Do you enjoy printing from a variety of surfaces and textures? Do you want to avoid the long cleanup, the dry hands, the solvents, and the toxic fumes of oil-based printmaking? This workshop will give you a thorough introduction to Akua-Kolor water-based inks.

In addition to all the basic additive, subtractive, and viscosity monotype techniques, we will use a variety of matrices to generate series and variations. Monotype inking and wiping combined with overprinting, transfers, ghost images, and chine colle can give rich variations of images. Drypoint, carborundum and silk collagraphs, previously etched plates, woodcuts, and stencils will all be demonstrated as ways of achieving richly layered prints.

Emphasis in the workshop is on identifying and enhancing the synergy between each participant's own way of making art and the processes of printmaking. Demonstrations, critiques, print viewing, and one-on-one consultation allow the pursuit of projects in depth.

Faculty:
Catherine Kernan currently teaches at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. She is co-owner and director of Mixit Print Studio in Somerville, Massachusetts. She received her BFA from Cooper Union and her MFA from the University of Wisconsin / Madison. The recipient of numerous grants, Catherine has exhibited her work widely and her work is in many public, private, and corporate collections.

As a medium, watercolor is unparalleled for its ability to express the translucent, the slippery, and the implied. It is the art of visualizing colored light and manipulating water and gravity-a balancing act between spontaneity and control. The group will work primarily outdoors, with supporting individual and group discussions and critiques. Conceptual strategies (thumbnail sketch, point of view, and layering) for moving an idea from initial impulse to finished painting will be presented. There will be analysis of properties inherent to the medium (the interaction of water, gravity, pigment, and paper) and consideration of various technical approaches to landscape with the aim of furthering a personal response to the medium and subject matter. Some experience with watercolor is recommended.

Faculty:
Jane Goldman is a painter/printmaker and public artist. She has taught at MassArt, UCLA, and Hartford Art School, and is co-director of Mixit Print Studio in Somerville, MA. Her work is in the collections of the Peabody Essex Museum, the Library of Congress, and the Boston Athenaeum. Her public commissions are at Logan Airport in Boston and the Kennedy Center in Providence, RI.
