Randy Garber

My work investigates perception and how meaning is deciphered. I use elemental and pedestrian materials (copper plates, copper tubes, player piano scrolls, plastic tubing) and traditional processes (etching, drypoint, graphite and pencil drawing) and deploy the shadows cast from the works to suggest lingering traces and infinite regressions of language spoken, heard and visually encoded.

Throughout my explorations in varied media in two and three dimensional work, my images and marks evoke a sense of order as well as orderly growth gone awry because I believe that the aberrant, the rogue and the wayward signals are the ones that can guide us to expanded understanding of our worlds and ourselves.

A recipient of many artist awards and grants including ones from The Traveling Fellowship from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, the Puffin Foundation, Wynn Newhouse Foundation, Capelli d’ Angeli Foundation and the St. Botolph Foundation, and the Somerville Arts Council, Garber's work can be found in museum, corporate, and private collections including The Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Decordova Museum, the Boston Athenaum, The Boston Public Library, the Children's Hospital, Karp Cancer Research Building, and the Governor Baxter School for the Deaf in Portland, ME.

Recent solo exhibitions of Garber's work include 17 Cox Gallery, Beverly, Massachuestts, the Atelier Gallery at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor (catalogue), Opalka Gallery at the Sage College of Albany (catalogue), the Bromfield Gallery in Boston, MA, and "High Strung" Solo exhibition at Trustman Gallery at Simmons College, October 2014.
